What musical device can composers use to lengthen a note by double? I need to know this for a part of a report I'm doing. Thanks :)

This question is weird. If you wanted to double the value of a note, you would just change the note. For example, if I had a quarter note and I wanted to double it. I would just make it a half note. Now, if you wanted to lengthen the note by 1/2, you would use a dotted note. For example a half note gets 2 beats in standard 4/4 time signature. However a dotted half note gets 3 beats. Hope this helps.
