How does average temperature change as latitude decreases from the poles to the
equator? Why?

The equator is the widest part of the earth- so it's the closest to the sun. As you get nearer to the sun, the hotter it gets and likewise, as you get further away from the sun, the colder it gets. So, following that logic, the further away you get from the equator, the colder it gets.
