Why did the divorce rate in America decline during the Great Depression despite the strain that the economic situation put on marriages? Couples stuck together to get through the dismal economic conditions. Couples could not afford lawyers to go through with divorce. Couples returned to traditional values that forbid getting a divorce. Couples had to stay together because they needed two incomes to survive. Couples were influenced by the Sunday church programs that aired on the radio.
