Why would former slaves and Radical Republicans describe the state of affairs following the Compromise of 1877 as “worse than slavery”?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@uri

OpenStudy (uri):

what help do you need?

OpenStudy (uri):

is plagiarism allowed if we enter sources?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i just dont know why they would say it was worse than slavery after the compromise....I know it led to segregation but i wouldnt say that is worse than slavery...my teacher said we could also deny or modify the claim if we dont support it but im so lost

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and no i dont think its plagiarism..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im just lost rn lol

OpenStudy (uri):

google and read

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i did that, but i wanted some opinions i guess...do you know anything about the topic?? i dont think it was worse than slavery, but it led to segregation which was still pretty bad

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but im not sure what else to write

@AravindG can you help?

OpenStudy (aravindg):

Sorry I am in weak in History :|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

://// its okay, im just confused and at a loss of what to write

OpenStudy (aravindg):

Didn't find any article about it on google?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well i read up on the compromise, but based on what the results seemed to be, it didnt seem worse than slavery...my teacher said if we dont agree with the statement, then we can refute it or modify it, and i think im gonna refute it, but im not sure what 3 arguments i could use to do that..and im trying to get the essay done within the next hour or so otherwise my mom is gonna kill me haha

OpenStudy (aravindg):

I just read this on wikipedia: "In the aftermath of the Compromise of 1877, Southern Democrats held the South's black community under increasingly tight control. Politically, blacks were gradually evicted from public office, as the few that remained saw the sway they held over local politics considerably decreased. Socially, the situation was worse, as the Southern Democrats tightened their grip on the labor force. Vagrancy and 'anti-enticement' laws were reinstituted. It became illegal to be jobless, or to leave a job before the contract expired. Economically, the blacks were stripped of independence, as new laws gave white planters the control over credit lines and property. Effectively, the black community was placed under a three-fold subjugation that was reminiscent of slavery." It seems we have to agree to this. Slavery is a bad thing -yes but look at his situation mentioned above. Doesnt it seem more severe?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

...i guess i was thinking it wasnt more severe bc they would get whipped and stuff when they were slaves?? i dont know

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so you would agree with the statement?

OpenStudy (aravindg):

I would agree. This situation didn't remove slavery but worsened it. Slavery meant people to work under somebody but with that Compromise more problems seemed to arise. The economy went in to hands of the officials, new laws were passed and property control was lost. Btw I am entirely new to this. I just did a quick reading to see if I could do something to help you.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i guess that is true. I might be able to write an essay with that. Maybe i could modify it so that i could say it was worse than slavery in some ways, but wasn't as extreme in others??? im not sure It only has to be 5 paragraphs, 1 opening, 3 body paragraphs, and 1 concluding paragrah

OpenStudy (anonymous):

honestly i suck at history and essays so this class has been pretty hard for me considering he assigns essays like every class haha

OpenStudy (aravindg):

Says you to someone who waved bye to history 5 years ago XD

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha lucky you. I'm just trying to get at least a C on this essay. at this point im more worried about what my mom will say if it isnt turned in in the next hour

OpenStudy (aravindg):

If I were to write the essay I would agree or disagree but not do a mixed one.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know, i usually dont write mixed ones but for this one i dont know if i can come up with 3 different arguments to either agree or disagree

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you mind giving me the link for where you found that first paragraph??

OpenStudy (aravindg):

Segregation, denial of voting rights of Blacks is one point you can argue on.

OpenStudy (aravindg):

Oops I closed it :/ Wait lemme see

OpenStudy (anonymous):

should i focus on the effect of black people economically, and then how they were treated socially? i was gonna do segregation as my last body paragraph

OpenStudy (aravindg):

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redeemers

OpenStudy (aravindg):

Yeah. You could devote each paragraph for diff effects like Intro Conditions social economic conclusion

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think i can do this now!! thank you for the help man i appreciate it

OpenStudy (aravindg):

You are welcome :)
