Need help with this word problem! Will medal!! Al bikes a trail to the top of a hill and back down. He bikes up the hill in m minutes, then returns twice as quickly downhill on the same trail. What is the total time, in HOURS, that Al spends biking up and down the hill?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

m/40

OpenStudy (openstudy9):

Why?

OpenStudy (openstudy9):

Then I will medal @tuxadog12

OpenStudy (openstudy9):

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

`He bikes up the hill in m minutes, then returns twice as quickly downhill on the same trail` how long (in terms of m) does he spend going downhill?

OpenStudy (openstudy9):

M/2

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

add `m` to `m/2` to get what?

OpenStudy (openstudy9):

2m/3

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

no

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

it might help to think of `m` as `2m/2`

OpenStudy (vianne):

You can't add a constant with a "like term." So it's 2m/2

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

2m/2 + m/2 = ???

OpenStudy (openstudy9):

3m/2

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so that's the total time in minutes how do we convert to hours?

OpenStudy (openstudy9):

We multiply by 60

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

|dw:1449873838443:dw|

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

we multiply by the conversion factor `(1 hour/60 minutes) |dw:1449873922882:dw|
