"It seems only yesterday..." signifies the narrator's sorrowful reminisce towards his youth. Coupled with that, his transition from light to blood when he described what was beneath him -- or rather, what he was made out of -- gives off a sort of lingering, almost melancholic vibe. It's as if he regretted growing up, and I truly believe that is what he wanted to convey with those words. The answer is therefore D, sadness at the loss of his youth.
