Look at this vocabulary of the "Property of the Opposite of a Sum" it explains that since there is a negative out side an equation in parenthesis that everything in the paranthesis would be the oppisite of what it is.... So -38 would be 38 and positive 17 would be -17 so the problem would be setup as the equation on the other side of the equation.... The picture that @ganeshie8 provided does help alot....you just need to try and figure it out or search what it means....
