The positive and negative controls within a given experiment stays constant throughout the whole experiment so that scientists have a standard that they can measure their results by. Knowing this definition of 'control', we see that B, C, and D all define this term. Now, we are only left with A which happens to be the right answer. The independent variable is manipulated (or changed) by the scientists so that they can ascertain that those variables affect the result (otherwise known as the dependent variable). So A is your best answer @Nerdsarecool.
