1.What was the author's main purpose for writing this passage? A.to convince students to do volunteer work B.to tell a funny story about something that occurred in school C.to describe the characteristics of an impressive person D.to explain how students can be useful to their communities
2.The author's purpose is to inform the reader. Which statement from the passage BEST demonstrates this intent? A.a verdant rainforest rises out of the ocean to snow-capped peaks. B.scholars are not sure about the legend but do speculate that the Maori discovered Aotearoa more than 1,000 years ago and that they came by boat from somewhere in the south pacific. C.rivers roar and meadows blossom. D.this question of their original home is not critical to appreciating their accomplishment.
for (1 I thought it was A or D) because it seems like their just telling students good memory's about what happened in some volunteer work it's not telling the reader to become a volunteer because they didn't say anything inspiring on why you should become a volunteer they was trying to talk about what all the good it did and how other people not have good memory's because of it and etc. but im still not sure if D is the answer to #1
For #1 i think its A. because it convinced the character in the story and it somewhat convinces the reader..... I also think its D. too, but i kind of don't because its not really explaining how students can be useful in their community. so i would go with A for number 1
Okay but can you help me figure out what the answer is for #2 @xxoNayyy I need help and i'll read it and give reasons why I think it's this specific answer and you tell me what you think and why :)
I think its A *A- i thinks its this because its straight up facts if you look it up B- i think its also this because it also has some facts in it BUT it says "scholars are not sure" and if their not sure then its not facts and its not the best demonstration compared to A :)
I think A go along with the first sentence but I don't get what #2 is asking when it say "demonstrates this intent" and I agree with B because it said "scholars are not sure about the legend but do speculate" and it said that "the Maori discovered Aotearoa more than 1,000 years ago and that they came by boat from somewhere in the south pacific." so between A and B to me B give a lot of reason to it and sounds like the Best but im not sure at all to be honest. I need 1 more person to agree to disagree so I know if your right that it's A or im right that it's B and etc
"demonstrate this intent" Intent means : Purpose or intention in this case its asking you which out of the responses given is the most fact given evidence from the text and by that it means ALL facts not partly .....but i too agree we should have a third person elaborate and give their opinion on this :)
Oh...then B wouldn't be it because it says "scholars are not sure" so I guess that's out
yes and also something to point out is that it says its an informative text since the authors purpose is to inform so look for a response that best informs the reader that the text is all about evidence only.....and for A if you look it up you can find a bunch of articles about a verdant rainforest rises out of the ocean to snow :)
well then A because as you said the purpose is to inform. and in A it informed us of a verdant rainforest rises out of the ocean to snow. and C I think basically just describes the sounds on the rivers making and etc
@Cardinal_Carlo can you give elaboration on number 2?
yes but the primary purpose of informational text is to convey information about the natural or social world, typically from someone presumed to know that information to someone presumed not to, with particular linguistic features such as headings and technical vocabulary to help accomplish that purpose. and it said that the purpose of the story was informational .....if the author wanted to to paint a picture in the readers mind wouldn't it be a descriptive text?
@Cardinal_Carlo ^^^^
I understand the sentiment @xxoNayyy. However, descriptive writing was used very briefly by the author and in our case, it was only found at the start of this document with the main purpose of drawing readers in. Overall, this document is an informational text because the bulk of the document is information that's new to the reader. If this document were to be categorized as a descriptive text, it would more than likely resemble either a fairy tale or a vivid anecdote.
yes but you picked C. Rivers Roar and Meadows Blossom ....thats why im debating lol but i guess your right it would be B. since i can agree with what your saying .... so there you have it @CookieMonster18 ....srry it took so long
We want to provide evidence that the author's true intent was to inform her reader. Let's take a look at our options: "A verdant rainforest rises out of the ocean to snow-capped peaks." and "Rivers roar and meadows blossom." personifies the natural beauties of New Zealand. The purpose of this descriptive writing technique is to provide the readers with imagery. At this point, the author is hopeful that the reader grows interest from the beginning. In other words, the author is not informing the reader but rather, showing something to the reader. We can cross out A and C. "This question of their original home is not critical to appreciating their accomplishment." leads the reader to a closing. At this point, the author is not informing but rather, leads the reader to a close. We can cross out D. "Scholars are not sure about the legend but do speculate that the Maori discovered Aotearoa more than 1,000 years ago and that they came by boat from somewhere in the south pacific." is the most informative statement out of all four candidates. Notice how the author is informing (or telling facts) to the reader. Your best answer here is B @CookieMonster18
Sorry about that @xxoNayyy I glossed over that mistake. You were right. My apologies.
its alright :) thats what i was confused about
im confused now :( so @Cardinal_Carlo I think #2 is B
@xxoNayyy can you tell me what just happened im very confused now
me and you agreed on that it was either A or B for number two .....and i convinced you it was A but @Cardinal_Carlo (our third person) said its B... so your final answer for number 2 is B :)
@xxoNayyy is right on that note.
Oh okay @xxoNayyy thanks a lot buddy. you really helped me a lot today :)
your welcome :)....though i was wrong with one of them lol number one is A number two is B
