OpenStudy (steve816):

Is mathematics the answer to the universe?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

42

OpenStudy (liv1234):

It depends.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

what is the question to the universe? then we will know if math is the answer or not ...

OpenStudy (pawanyadav):

It's PHYSICS.......

OpenStudy (welshfella):

Science explains How? pretty well . Its the question Why? it has difficulty with.

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

Some argue that a statement in science need not be true. Science just provides models to explain some behavior. No matter how complicated they are, end of the day they are just models, invented by men. They need not be true. So, the task of checking the truthfulness of a particular statement in science is not the job of science.

OpenStudy (welshfella):

Interesting point.

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

So science has no difficulty to answer the question "why". Science replies w/o any difficulty: "Its not my job to answer why"

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

Again, thats just one point of view... many ppl have issues with that view too

Parth (parthkohli):

On the other hand though, mathematics is as pure as it gets. It is closest to the truth, but I don't know what an "answer to the universe" is.

OpenStudy (welshfella):

Should not someone ask why?

OpenStudy (bubblegum.):

you have a brain but brain is not the only thing that helps you sustain life. there are other things as well which play a vital role like this math does play a very vital role in explaining facts but science also does helps.

OpenStudy (nuttyliaczar):

Even if math is the answer to the universe, we wouldn't know it. We can't view the entire structure of the universe to see if it follows the rules of math. And at the same time math is made to describe everything else, so it can bend itself to describe even the seemingly impossible. But it's only able to do that to the best of our ability, and our ability is via science which is inductive in nature. And that's imperfect.

OpenStudy (pawanyadav):

Can't you discuss it some other day ,pls....we are waiting for you in actual maths question..

Nnesha (nnesha):

Chocolate is the answer.

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

@welshfella imagine you're having below conversation with science :

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

You : why earth rotates around sun ? Science : gravity pulls earth towards sun, but earth wants to go straight. therefore circular motion is a compromise. You : why gravity attracts earth toward sun ? Science : that is due to newton's law of gravitation You : why newton's or anybody law works ? Science : i don't know, they are based on decades of observation and nobody has ever found any violation.

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

Any "why" conversation in science always ends with some law or something about observations

OpenStudy (welshfella):

yes i see

OpenStudy (welshfella):

I think 42 is the best answer yet!

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

i completely agree ! :)

OpenStudy (ikram002p):

OpenStudy (ikram002p):

oh no i have lost my long reply :(

OpenStudy (irishboy123):

what a brilliant thread!!!!! more?
