Suppose an empty grocery cart rolls downhill in a parking lot. The cart has a maximum soeed of 1.3 m/s when it hits the side of the store and comes to rest .3 seconds later. If an unbalanced force of -65 N stops the cart, what is the mass of the grocery cart?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know F=ma, and -65 N = ma, but I honestly cant get farther than there.

OpenStudy (dan815):

Okay so im going to just assume some things, like the cart actually went into the store after crashing thru the window or something

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Most likely

OpenStudy (dan815):

so 1.3 m/s must come to a stop in 0.3 seconds

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-1.3/.3 ?

OpenStudy (dan815):

so what was the acceleration

OpenStudy (anonymous):

0-1.3 ______ .3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

- 4 1/3

OpenStudy (dan815):

okay so we know this acceleration is the result of -65 N

OpenStudy (anonymous):

THATS WHAT I WAS MISSING THANK YOU. I DIVIDE -65 BY -4 1/3 AND THAT'S THE ANSWER RIGHT?

OpenStudy (dan815):

yeah

OpenStudy (anonymous):

15 KG?

OpenStudy (dan815):

yeaah

OpenStudy (anonymous):

YES! Thank you sO MUCH!!!!

OpenStudy (dan815):

sure thing :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1450049559844:dw|

OpenStudy (dan815):

also i want you to be a little careful about some assumption we made here

OpenStudy (anonymous):

?

OpenStudy (dan815):

you know how u did 1.3/0.3 for the acceleration component

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, -1.3/.3

OpenStudy (dan815):

this is we are assuming this qeuation is true A = (Vf-Vi)/t

OpenStudy (anonymous):

When wouldn't it be?

OpenStudy (dan815):

This is an equation that models linear acceleration this is actually known as avg acc it is not generally the real acc

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh my

OpenStudy (dan815):

we dont know the kind of collisio0n that really happened and the differen ways the acceleration behaved like for example the acc could be high and all of a sudden low but in the end still ended up stopping in 0.3 secons multiple behavior of acc can lead to it stopping in 0.3 secs

OpenStudy (dan815):

just something to keep in mine, that different behavior of accleration is going to be seen in different velocities and different distances the cart travelled

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm in 8th grade physics right now haha, so it's probably the linear one for now.

OpenStudy (dan815):

in mind*

OpenStudy (dan815):

okay but its okay!! since it just says its an unbalanced forced of -65 N, this means it was really linear

OpenStudy (dan815):

its good you are doing this in grade 8 then, u will have lots of time to think about this stuff :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok, that sounds good! I really like bio, and i dont really like physics that much, so im not that excited haha

OpenStudy (dan815):

oh okay i see then nvm

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I love dissections and bio in general

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But yea. Thank you so much!

OpenStudy (dan815):

sure thing :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:)

OpenStudy (dan815):

also you should click the orange rate a qualified helper button at top, that way the i get some monay :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Dannggg

OpenStudy (dan815):

hehe ty

OpenStudy (anonymous):

*now wants to be a qualified helper haha*

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No problemo haha

OpenStudy (dan815):

lool its just for fun u cant do anything with this

OpenStudy (dan815):

yeeettt

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ( ; - ; )

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is there anything I can do with the cents I have? I have 23

OpenStudy (dan815):

yeah u can buy some titles

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How?

OpenStudy (dan815):

u need 50 first though

OpenStudy (dan815):

you can find titles in your profile

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Dangit. How do I get more cents haha?

OpenStudy (dan815):

everytime someone gives you a medal you will get more smartcents

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh dang. that's cool

OpenStudy (dan815):

jut answer some ppls questions

OpenStudy (dan815):

or make a picture on some post lol that usually works

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well sounds good. Thanks for the medal I'm one closer yay!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol

OpenStudy (dan815):

lol
