Do I use sine or cosine to solve?

OpenStudy (smartyprincess):

sorry, don't know this stuff, only finding areas of triangles and if you don't mind me mentioning also circles

Okay so first, you want to use sine to find w, so it should look like: sin50=w/10, then when you solve for w, you'd use sine again, to find angle x. let me know if you're still having trouble with it (just think SOH-CAH-TOA, sin- opposite side over hypotenuse, cosine is adjacent side over hypotenuse, and tangent it opposite side over adjacent side)

OpenStudy (shaleiah):

13.05

what did you get 13.05 is equal to?

OpenStudy (shaleiah):

10/sin(50)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i believe you set it up wrong. it should be sin50=w/50, because sine multiplied by an angle is equal to the opposite side divided by the hypotenuse. \[\sin x= \frac{ opposite }{ hypotenuse }\]

OpenStudy (shaleiah):

.015320 is what I got

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok let me walk you through it. so keeping in mind the equation i showed you before, it should be \[\sin 50=\frac{ w }{ 10 }\] then, to plug that into a calculator, you'd have to simplify it to be \[w=10\sin 50\] i just multiplied both sides by 10. then, when you plug that into the calculator, you should get 7.66 as w. then, you want to solve for x. so you use sine once again, but it would look like this: \[\sin x=\frac{ 7.66 }{ 11}\] when you plug that into the calculator, you have to make sure you say\[\sin^{-1} =\frac{ 7.66 }{ 11 }\] you should get 41 as x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

let me know if you're totally lost about something i did, or if there is any confusion

OpenStudy (shaleiah):

44.13

yep, that would be your x.
