Can any quadratic equation be solved by using the quadratic formula? .....

I have a problem about solving maximum altitude and another about number of items cost is minimized..... that both give an equation in the form of a quadratic equation. So my question is despite both being completely different story problems, (altitude & cost) can I use the quadratic formula on both ?

provide both equations are in the form

ax^2 + bx + c =0

tehn you can use the formula.

NOTE you wil only get REAL values for the roots if th evalue in the (squareroot) term is positive - i.e. b^2 > 4ac
