How to find the length of a diagonal of a rectangle?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

I'd suggest that you actually draw a rectangle and inside it draw a diagonal. What shape is formed by the diagonal and the two legs (made up by the length and width of the rectangle)?|dw:1450149775449:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It forms two right triangles

So how would I go about finding the length without an equation?

OpenStudy (ram231):

you use the pythagorean theorem.... \[a ^{2}+b ^{2}= c ^{2}\]

OpenStudy (mathmale):

since no numeric values are given for the lengths, just solve the Pythagorean Theorem equation given you by RAM231 for D, the length of the diagonal.

Ok thanks!

OpenStudy (mathmale):

You're welcome.

OpenStudy (ram231):

Your welcome for giving the equation :D I feel special now (:
