Our family had gone on vacation every summer since I could remember. Although my little sister and I fought for most of the long car ride down to the beach or some distant location, we both secretly loved the trip. Between school and soccer and dance lessons and our parents’ jobs, it was the most time we all spent together during the year. When Mom and Dad sat us down for our annual “Be nice to your sister on this trip. She’s the only one you’ll ever have,” chat, Rhodesia and I pretended not to be excited. Mom sat next to me on the couch while Dad stood near the coffee table. “Girls, I know how much you look forward to our summer vacations.” He cleared his throat. “Unfortunately, this year there has been a change of plans.” Change of plans? What is he talking about? I thought. “This year we probably won’t be able to go anywhere,” Dad said. I have no idea what he said after that because I was in shock. The one thing I looked forward to during the summer was canceled
