How did the presidential election of 1844 affect texas? Please help!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The easy answer is that it brought in a President, James K. Polk, who was rabid for western expansion to promote slavery into what is now the Southwestern United States. His opponent, Henry Clay, wanted to maintain the current equilibrium of "free" and "slave" states. The term, "Manifest Destiny", which was essentially a high sounding synonym for "land grabbing" became the mantra for Polk's successful election. With Polk's election, it became inevitable that there would be a Mexican-American War for which the Mexican Government and Military were wholly unprepared and the eventual Mexican Cession which brought Texas and California along with portions of other current western states into the US. It also just further inflamed national tensions regarding slavery with the status of Texas being a major component of this.
