@Adrianna.Gongora is right. 'autos' is derived from Greek, which roughly translates as 'self'. To better understand 'autosome', think of it as its derivatives 'autos' + 'chromosome' = self + chromosome. Meaning, these chromosomes dictate your human physicality. Alternatively, you could see these as genetic sequence that determine your base build as a human being before specializing into either gender. On the other hand, sex chromosomes, do in fact, dictate your gender. They instruct your body to develop ovaries or testicles, develop a phallus or a clitoris, develop breasts or a flat chest, and even plays a role on how much body hair you may or may not produce.
