OpenStudy (kobeni-chan):

What is variable n in tangent/cotangent functions? Will medal!

OpenStudy (kobeni-chan):

My class material says the domain in tangent is all real numbers except those of which equal pi/2 + n(pi)

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Please provide an illustration of what you mean. Your wording is unclear and lacks specifics.

OpenStudy (kobeni-chan):

I think it's talking about vertical asymptotes. It's Pre-Calc if that helps any. They didn't give me any example problem so I'm not sure how to illustrate it.

OpenStudy (kobeni-chan):

@mathmale

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Well think about what tangent is \(\large tan(x) = \frac{sin(x)}{cos(x)}\) It has vertical asymptotes wherever cos(x) = 0 And where do those occur?? we know cos(pi/2) = 0 and we know any integer multiple of pi added to that also make cos(x) = 0 Looking at the unit circle, it makes sense |dw:1450240189982:dw|

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

So I guess to more-specifically answer the 'n' question, n is any integer that is multiplied to pi

OpenStudy (kobeni-chan):

@johnweldon1993 I think I get it... pretty sure lol. Thanks for your help! :)

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Lol no problem! if you still have any questions though just lemme know :)

OpenStudy (kobeni-chan):

Ok thank you!!
