OpenStudy (bunnielover948):

Help!! Explain why the two figures below are not similar.

OpenStudy (bunnielover948):

OpenStudy (leonardo0430):

you will want to start off first by stating the coordinates of both shapes

OpenStudy (bunnielover948):

ok

OpenStudy (leonardo0430):

now after you had plotted the coordinates you will notice that the original shape (the one in the right) has doubled its size. since it has grown all of the points will be multiplied by two. but as you can see MN is supposed to be FG, but it has not doubled in size

OpenStudy (bunnielover948):

I don't get it. How has it doubled in size by plotting the coordinates?

OpenStudy (leonardo0430):

let me show you , the distance between J and K are two boxes, since the shape has doubled its size this means that the distance will be doubled. the distance between C and D are now 4 boxes ( distance has been doubled)

OpenStudy (bunnielover948):

oh ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

LEO

OpenStudy (leonardo0430):

but if you take alook at M and N the distance is by 1 box, while in the other shape F and G are still by 1 box, while they should be between 2 boxes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if you look at n to m on the little picture it goes up the same as the big picture, if it were similar it would only go up 1/2 a square

OpenStudy (leonardo0430):

yes @I_luv_Sparkles ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

does that help?

OpenStudy (bunnielover948):

i get it, but how are they not similar. Are they congruent (the same)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and if you look from I to J then from B to C it's a different slope so it can't be similar, so they are not congruent

OpenStudy (bunnielover948):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no relation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

does that help

OpenStudy (bunnielover948):

ok. Yep it helps a lot thank you!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no problem

OpenStudy (leonardo0430):

if they were to be similar this is how it would look like

OpenStudy (anonymous):

May you please give me a medal? if not that's fine

OpenStudy (leonardo0430):

ill give you one

OpenStudy (bunnielover948):

I'm sorry @Jlykins I gave the medal to @leonardo0430 because @leonardo0430 was the first to help me. :'(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok, thnx

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hope i was a big help

OpenStudy (bunnielover948):

You were i wish i could give more than one medal :'(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it's fine

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i

OpenStudy (bunnielover948):
