Marty's class collected $26.00 in a school-wide penny collection contest. If Tommy's class added $4.00 to the amount they collected, x, and then multiplied the sum by 2, they would have the same amount of money as Marty's class. 2(x + $4.00)= $26.00 A. $13.00 B. $17.00 C. $9.00 D. $4.00

Apparently all you have to do here is to solve the given equation. What would you do first to accomplish that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You'd need to figure out whats inside the parenthesis first wouldn't you?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

That's a good question. However, without knowing the value of x, we can't do much with x+4.00. the goal here is to solve for the unknown quantity, x. How would you begin to isolate x+4.00?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's what i'm stuck on.

Can you help? @mathmale
