Anyone know how to start an essay that talks about heroism.

Well, first, you should start by researching what makes a hero, different aspects and types of heroes, your belief on what a hero is, etc., etc.
Then, when you have that information, create an outline that gives you a brief overview on what you're going to write in each paragraph of the essay.
When that's completed, write the first draft of your essay, using your outline like a road map.
When that's completed, take a break, relax for a bit, and then review and revise your first draft to create your final draft.

A good essay begins with a hook,. Then describe your thesis. Then state the thesis. For example:

Up up and away - he leaps tall buildings in a single bound! Look, up in the sky, it's Superman! He's one of the best known heroes in the world. But in the real world, even heroes don't have super powers. They aren't perfect. They aren't even much better than everyone else on a day to day basis. Heroism isn't about what's easy: smashing mountains when you have super strength. Heroism is about what's hard: standing up to a bully when you know he'll give you a black eye for your trouble. Heroism is rising above your human weaknesses to do something special.
