What is the length, in units, of segment CD? 6 8.5 7 9.8

OpenStudy (12g):

@lvana

OpenStudy (welshfella):

are you familiar with trigonometry?

OpenStudy (12g):

no this is geometry

OpenStudy (welshfella):

oh its easy using trig.. I cant see a way to do it with geometry. Maybe I'm slow today...

OpenStudy (12g):

how?

OpenStudy (12g):

@Lexi_Loves

OpenStudy (welshfella):

Its easy to find the length of BC by using Pythagoras. BC^2 = 7^2 - 5^2

OpenStudy (welshfella):

ah yes use similar triangles triangle ADB and CDA are similar so corresponding sides are in the same ratio.

OpenStudy (welshfella):

so 5/7 = 7 / CD solve this for CD

OpenStudy (welshfella):

the triangles are similar because <BAC = < ACD ( internal altrnate angles) , and we have 2 right angles so all angles are equal , therefore the triangles are similar.

OpenStudy (welshfella):

5/7 = 7 / CD therefore CD = 7^2 / 5 = 49/5

OpenStudy (welshfella):

use your calculator to work out 49 divided by 5 and you have the answer

OpenStudy (welshfella):

* triangles ABC and CDA are similar
