The evolution of language is something that is always happening. It is not like people are still speaking like Shakespeare had. Even Americans speak differently than British people do.
With the addition of the internet, such language evolution has increased its pace which might be why people not even a decade apart might experience different trends in the language. Change is always a tough thing to accept. But accept it we must, because without change there can be no progress.

an interesting thought, consider reading the book 1984. It is a distopian novel that covers your problem.
