Robert is now six years older than Marie. In eight years, the sum of their ages will be 40. How old are each of them now? Here is my answer not sure

Marie x x+8
Robert x+6 x +6 + 8
x+8 + x +14 = 40
2x + 22 = 40
2x = 18
x = 9
Marie is 9 and Robert is 15

That can't be true because if you add eight to the totals then they wouldn't add up to 40
