Poverty was more rampant as the US wasn't industrialized yet, wealth is always very unequally distributed in countries that aren't yet or are currently industrializing Wealth was concentrated, with few at the top having the vast majority Opportunity, there wasn't much of it, every race besides whites were disadvantage, from the Asians (Chinese exclusion act is one example) to African Americans (Couldn't access the same facilities as whites), even whites didn't have as much of an opportunity. Many white nationalities such as Irish or Italians were treated as second class citizens. There was also little governmental oversight to stop corporations from abusing their employees and paying them insignificant wages.
