Policy HB-1 Policy, also known as the School Bus policy About the Policy HB-1 is a policy that controls the funding of the school buses. As stated in the bill, it also "authorizes certain commercial advertisements on school buses." The advertisements themselves, however, could be the issue in this policy. They can promote family-friendly advertisers; any supermarket, for example. But they need to make sure that certain advertisements, like a promotion of drugs, are prohibited. Costs and Benefits The students taking the school bus to and from school are affected by the policy idea. The school itself is also affected, and this is beneficial. Making a profit off of advertisements would mean more money to buy new and better supplies, like computers, textbooks, and lab equipments. Companies would be advertising their products to children and adolescents. This would help them get more business and then make more profit. While there are some other great things that could come from this policy, there are also some drawbacks. Some parents may feel that their kids should not be exposed to advertisements. They would not approve of their child being in that kind of environment. Also, advertisements could potentially send the wrong message to children riding the bus. For example, if there was an advertisement promoting a fast-food restaurant such as McDonald, then it could encourage students to have an unhealthy diet. Recommendation I recommend to vote against the policy idea. Advertisements can influence many people daily, especially in their youth, and a lot of the time they give a negative message. The promotion of fast food and materialism on a school bus is only interfering with a child's development rather than assisting it. So, I think it would be a better idea to display messages involving studying and reading. The advertisements on school buses could even bring awareness to topics such as bullying.
