what is gross motor skills

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Gross motor skills are the first type of motor skills a child will learn. As a newborn infant, they are only able to use their basic reflexes like sucking and grasping. As they mature they develop their gross motor skills, which include the basic movements of the head, body, legs, and arms. An easy example would be an infant who starts walking around the age of 10 months have developed their gross motor skills. From age one to five children will develop their fine motor skills, which are precise movements, especially of the hands. Examples of fine motor skills, which are usually fully developed by age 6 are drawing basic shapes, buttoning a shirt, or tying their shoes. By age ten, they develop their complex manipulative skills, which include things like throwing and catching. Hope this helps and good luck!
