Because he was the youngest Pharaoh of Egypt and was one of the only untouched tombs. When they discovered it they also found mass amounts of treasure.

Sorry for the lateness but yes! exactly what @hunterj68 as well the cause of his death is somewhat figured out but not exactly; so it's still somewhat of a mystery. The discoverers who found Tut's tomb died a few days later due to the air/chems in the tomb. The polluted air had said to come from the tomb since it is the only Pharaoh tomb that hasn't been opened by bandits of the ones that have been discovered.
