A residual is the error, so to speak, in the y values http://stattrek.com/statistics/dictionary.aspx?definition=Residual it's equal to the difference in the observed y value and the predicted y value -------------------------------------------------- Look at the graph and you'll see the blue point (1,2) on it. If you draw a vertical line through that point, you'll land on the diagonal line at (1,4) The observed y value is y = 2 from the blue point The predicted y value, from the diagonal regression line, is y = 4 The error is Residual = Observed value - Predicted value Residual = 2 - 4 Residual = -2 So for the x value of x = 1, the residual is -2 The x value and residual will pair up to form an ordered pair point (1,-2). This will be one point on the residual plot http://stattrek.com/statistics/dictionary.aspx?definition=Residual%20plot Repeat these steps for all of the x values for each blue point shown. This will generate the complete residual plot
