During the 1960s, protest took many different forms. One of those was the protest march. Large groups of people gathered together to show that they disagreed with a particular policy or law. Many people at these marches would carry posters with slogans that advertised what they believed in or what they were trying to change. Often, folk singers would lead the crowd in singing about their hopes for change.
Phil Ochs appeared at many of these events. He wrote songs about how black Americans were mistreated in the South. He also wrote songs that protested the war in Vietnam. Not all songs were serious and dramatic. His song "The Draft Dodger Rag" was a list of all the excuses that a young man might use to get out of having to go to war.
