(1) I really don’t know how it all went wrong. (2) It started out as a simple idea—I wanted to make a birthday cake for my mother. (3) My mom has always been a wonderful cook. (4) I had never successfully baked anything—much less something as complicated as a cake. (5) She was working late that day, so I rushed home from school to get started on the cake. (6) I got out the recipe book and found a recipe for "Delicious Chocolate Cake." (7) I ran around the kitchen gathering ingredients. (8) The first thing listed on the recipe was cocoa. (9) "Hmm . . . I know! I can use some Coco Puffs cereal!" I said to myself. (10) Then, the recipe called for baking soda. (11) I looked into the fridge and found some diet soda in a can. (12) "This looks like the stuff," I said and poured the whole can of diet soda into the mixing bowl.
