how do i reduce a fraction to its lowest terms

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Prime Factorization.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Divide the numerator and denominator by the largest common factor. That will do it in one step. You can also divide the numerator and denominator by the same number. Then if you can, divide again the numerator and denominator by the same number (which may be different from the first number you used earlier.) Keep doing these divisions until you can't divide by any other number. This will take several steps, but the result will be the same.
