Please help! For what values of t is 2x-3y=5 and 8x-12y=t inconsistent?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

D: i dont remember this section

OpenStudy (imakeitrainmoney):

are u talking about slopes and intercepts?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No its a system of equations. the goal is to get both equations to NOT equal each other but I'm not sure how to exactly solve it.

OpenStudy (imakeitrainmoney):

idk i forget sorry :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that's okay, do you know anyone that could help me?

OpenStudy (imakeitrainmoney):

@Mehek14

OpenStudy (imakeitrainmoney):

give @Ilovepurple42043 the link

OpenStudy (welshfella):

they are inconsistent if they have no solution Hint:- Multiply each term in the first equation by 4 What do you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

8x-12y=5

OpenStudy (welshfella):

no its not 5 its 5*4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh, I forgot that part, so it'd be 8x-12y=20

OpenStudy (welshfella):

OK these 2 equations will give the same line if plotted Now for any other value of the last number - ie not 20 , The graphs of the lines would be parallel and be inconsistent

OpenStudy (welshfella):

So t = any real number except 20.

Thank you!
