Sum means you add the two, this is just like dealing with two fractions so don't let it scare you. You may apply, \[\frac{ a }{ b } \pm \frac{ c }{ d } = \frac{ ad \pm bc }{ bd } \]

I have put \[\pm \] as it indicates you can use this for if you are finding the sum (adding) or the difference (subtracting)
