No system is completely closed off from its surroundings. Which represents a system that is almost completely closed? A. a capped soda bottle B. a pot of boiling water C. a washing machine D. a wood-burning fireplace
A capped soda bottle is almost isolated frm its surroundings
No air is allowed to enter into the bottle
No air can go outside frm the bottle
I would say a washing machine. Why you ask? 'cuz, take the capped soda bottle. Its a closed system, but it is transferring energy to its surroundings! Say that the bottle is cold. It will be taking in heat or if it was hot, giving them! As for the washing machine, its kinda like the odd one out. The rest are completely open or transfers energy. Hope this helped.
I think both @CapAllan and @shamim raised some good points. I would agree with the choice of the soda bottle. Though there is definitely heat transfer, the plastic is a decent insulator and there is no mass transfer. For the washing machine to function, it has to take in matter (clothes, detergent, water from plumbing) and energy (in the form of electricity)
