Help

OpenStudy (xximhisgirlxx):

Does the following study contain bias? Due to an up-coming county election, some candidates want to conduct a poll to determine the opinions of county residents on some of the major issues. Volunteers are placed through-out the county at major intersections during the afternoon rush hour when people are returning home from work. Motorists were then randomly selected for the sample. No, because the sample was selected randomly. *myanswer Yes, because the sample over-represented people who drive vehicles.

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Drive Cars, Have Jobs, Willing to Stop. It is also substantially self-selected, since you can't pull people out of their cars.

OpenStudy (xximhisgirlxx):

So, am I right?

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

You tell me. Formulate an opinion. Rely on your instincts.

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

It is biased, because it does not include a sample of the population that do not drive

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

There are random sampling for specific groups that fall into the category of stratified or cluster sampling where samples are criterion specific such as study of doctors, or students etcetera etcetera, but the one you indicated does not fit to those types. Therefore, it is biased sampling under "selection bias".

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

so if the sample size only involved people who drive, then there is an over-representation of that particular sample compare to the whole population, those that do not drive or those that do not even use major intersections and many other people.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@nincompoop did you get suspended? Because that's what happened to me when I gave out answer after giving an explanation :3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

*an answer and after that giving

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

I did provide an answer but my response involved explication of bias sampling such as selection bias (there are different kinds) and other modes of sampling that may appear biased but are actually randomized such as stratified or clustering.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@nincompoop You still provided the answer before the user interacted with you. My advice, delete your reply containing the answer and then wait for the user to respond. Then answer. Otherwise, like me, you'll probably get suspended.

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

See how I did not use right away the choices provided and I used my own reasoning from my background of the subject.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

"It is biased, because...", you answered first though. Idk, I mean, I did the exact same thing and just got suspended.

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

too bad for you

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

this is not about you, this is about statistics

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, it's about not giving a direct answer

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

I will not change my response.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Then you'll have to be reported.

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

I mean I could be 50% wrong with my response.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That doesn't change the fact that you gave a direct answer and explained afterwards

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

So what do you think is the answer?

OpenStudy (alexandervonhumboldt2):

why so many people here :\

OpenStudy (marieblossom16):

it does since the girl who asked the question is asking for others opinion on if she's right.

OpenStudy (alexandervonhumboldt2):

guys lets stop this stupid argument.

OpenStudy (alexandervonhumboldt2):

the asker came offline from your argument

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

wrong. she was already gone when I decided to give my piece

OpenStudy (alexandervonhumboldt2):

:\

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

you're 100% incorrect

OpenStudy (alexandervonhumboldt2):

i'm 0% correct

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

laughing hysterically inside my head

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@pooja195 Well what do you think?

OpenStudy (alexandervonhumboldt2):

well, for pooja everything is a direct answer :( so lets not ask her.

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

@MysticalFlames what do you think is the answer and provide your reasoning.

pooja195 (pooja195):

I don't know stats yet so I can't agree/disagree with anyone. Sorry.

OpenStudy (alexandervonhumboldt2):

i agree with nin

OpenStudy (anonymous):

"LOL*

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

@MysticalFlames what do you think is the answer and provide your reasoning.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@nincompoop That's not what this is about. You gave an answer without the asker interacting with you. That's not allowed. @pooja195 I'm disappointed you haven't said anything yet. Look at her answer.

pooja195 (pooja195):

Tbh the asker never interacted with either of the people who answered the question which shows the asker wasn't interested in learning or felt that they had better things to do. I would leave the descisoin to punish anyone to a mod. @jigglypuff314

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@pooja195 Actually, the asker did. With the first person. The mod...

pooja195 (pooja195):

I'm not a mod I can't do much about the issue. In my perspective it was a direct answer. But you'll have to wait for a mod sorry.

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

For me, if the OP has already presented sufficient work and discussion, let's all feel free to provide encouraging reassurance - which certainly may include a reiteration of "the answer".
