OpenStudy (samslays):

@emmagrace231 Tell me what examples you have so far showing that Henry is growing and what two examples you have to show that he changed from the end

emmagrace231 (emmagrace231):

@Samslays To be totally honest, I really didn't understand this book. I think the main reason was i just didn't like it and was uninterested. The only answer I can think of so far is: Henry views of courage and what it means to have courage changed and We can see that henry has changed because in the beginning, henry only joined the army to gain glory, then he runs away in fear of being killed, and when he goes back, becomes one of the bravest soldiers in his regiment.

THIS IS ONLY AN EXAMPLE. YOU MAY NOT COPY AND PASTE THIS WHOLE PASSAGE OR BIG JUNKS OF IT.IF THAT IS DONE IT WIL GET BOTH ME AND YOU AN TROUBLE. YOU MAY ONLY COPY AND PASTE QUOTES THAT WERE IN THE BOOK Ok, so, first start your paper off like this: In the novel, "The Red Badge of Courage", the author Stephen Crane restates again and again that maturity comes through experience. This means that no matter how old you are, you are not as intune with the world as someone who has experienced similar situations. The main character in the novel, Henry Flemming, grows gradually over time throughout the novel. One major event that changed Henry's views on war was when he got hurt himself. This scene took place shortly after Henry awoke the following day, after a battle, with a head injury. He was talking to “the friend”, or Wilson, “Then a sudden thought came to him. " Oh! Jim Conklin's dead." His friend started. ‘What? Is he? Jim Conklin? ’The youth spoke slowly " Yes. He's dead. Shot in th' side."(Crane, 153). This example shows that Henry appears to finally have an “awakening”. It sinks into his mind that war is not all fun and games. War causes people, like Henry, to lose people who are very dear to them. Another major event that contributed to Henry's growth in the novel was when he ran away from war. In chapter 12, Crane describes Henry's actions as "" Why — why — what — what 's th' matter?" Soon he was in the midst of them. They were leaping and scampering all about him....The youth turned from one to another of them as they galloped along. His incoherent questions were lost. They were heedless of his appeals. They did not seem to see him......The youth, after rushing about and throwing interrogations at the heedless bands of retreating infantry, finally clutched a man by the arm. They swung around face to face. " Why — why " stammered the youth struggling with his balking tongue."(Crane, 119). This shows, yet again, that the youth is relizing that war is not all it is cracked up to be. It also shows that he is not fully aware f his surrounding and what is going on. Finally, the last major event that shows that Henry is growing is when Wilson goes to get water. In chapter 18, Crane describes this scene as, "The youth's friend had a geographical illusion concerning a stream, and he obtained permission to go for some water...The youth went with his friend"(Crane, 172). This shows that Henry is no longer just thinking about his own reputaion and dying in battle in a "Greeklike" way, he is also thinking about his soilders in his regiment. I believe that Henry did grow by the end of the book. “It was difficult to think of reputation when others were thinking of skins.” (Crane,192), shows that Henry is no longer thinking about himself, but is thinking about his former soilders as well. In chapter 24, Crane depicts Henry after the war as, "He felt a quiet manhood, nonassertive but of sturdy and strong blood. He knew that he would no more quail before his guides wher ever they should point.(Crane, 232). This shows that Henry finally relized that he is not as grown up as he thought he was and that he knows now to only take an offer when he knows he can tackle it. @emmagrace231

OpenStudy (samslays):

@emmagrace231 You may copy and paste this, but please try to change some of the wording into your own, this is so no one will be accused of plagirizing :)

OpenStudy (samslays):

@emmagrace231 especially the part that talks about Henry waking up after he was hurt because I took it directly out of my paper

emmagrace231 (emmagrace231):

Thanks for helping me. Don't worry. I won't copy and paste. I am not going to copy and paste any of it. I just needed help getting ideas of what to put. Thanks again!

OpenStudy (samslays):

@emmagrace231 your welcome. I honestly don't mind if you copy and paste the whole thing as your template, just change that part where he woke up wit the head injury, that is the only part directly from my paper.

emmagrace231 (emmagrace231):

ok. Thanks!

OpenStudy (samslays):
