How did Romans become members of the Senate during the Roman Republic? People were elected to serve as Senators by the citizens of Rome. Citizens were invited to become Senators by a voice vote in the Senate. Admission to the Senate was solely based upon how much property a citizen possessed. After high elected officials served out their terms, they became Senators for life.
They were not elected by the people, they were chosen by people higher up and brought into the lowest level of government. Back then the Senate could not create laws or anything, they were instead very influencial.
