"Introduction to Linear Algebra", Strang. Worked example 2.1 B (1) says "add" to get 0=1 but the last equation is actually subtracted from the other two. Why?

There is a multiplication first by 1, 1, and -1, so all the quotients change sign in the third equation. An addition of a negative number is effectively a subtraction.
