My argument
Pepsin is activated by pepsinogen. So pepsinogen is activated by HCl, that is inside the stomach ! Therefore the pH should be an acidic pH. Pepsin acts on proteins breaking them in to smaller molecules.

Pepsin is an enzyme. As we know, an enzyme breaks down stuff into simpler substances. And we also know that the pH of pepsin is 2. Another good point is that since pepsin is an enzyme, it breaks down stuff.
