Given the system of equations presented here: 4x + y = 4 2x + 7y = 28 Which of the following actions creates an equivalent system such that, when combined with the other equation, one of the variables is eliminated? Multiply the second equation by −1 to get −2x − 7y = −28 Multiply the second equation by −4 to get −8x − 28y = −112 Multiply the first equation by −7 to get −28x − 7y = −28 Multiply the first equation by −2 to get −8x − 2y = −8

What do YOU think? Why would we want to multiply one of the equations by some number? You need to understand the purpose of that step.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you want direct answers or explanations..?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got c i just needed my answer checked

OpenStudy (mathmale):

@midnighti: That's not a valid question. We're not allowed to give direct answers. Rather, provide just enough guidance so that the person you're helping can find his or her own answer himself (or herself).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I believe you are correct, do you think it's correct? @mathmale Thank you for that information, but I have already known. That is why I have asked if he was wanting direct answers because I do not give them.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

If your student thinks "c" is the correct answer, ask y our student to explain why that is. We should all know how to check our own answers.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

why ask someone whether he wants something you don't plan to give?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is asking for confirmation an issue? @mathmale

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Why not?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

See my previous comment, please.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I could help if he wanted direct answers, anyway.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

the idea here is to involve your student in learning how to do this type of problem independently.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im going with c

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Here is the question: Given the system of equations presented here: 4x + y = 4 2x + 7y = 28 Which of the following actions creates an equivalent system such that, when combined with the other equation, one of the variables is eliminated? Why have you chosen "c" as your answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@mathmale I can help without giving a direct answer, and I did not give any direct answers, I just confirmed what he got right. @xXsebastianXx I think you are right. I'm a 7th grader that isn't too strong is math but I think you're right. Go with it :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You're so very welcome! :)

OpenStudy (mathmale):

I'm afraid you miss the point. Have you helped your student check that "c" is correct? If you "think" that "c" is correct, you're not really in a position to verify someone else's answer choice.
