Medal and Fan!!! Solve for x: |x + 2| + 16 = 14

OpenStudy (snowystorm777):

help?

OpenStudy (snowystorm777):

welcome to open study @Fuzzbro

OpenStudy (blyue):

Well... I got -4. I'm not entirely sure of my answer, though. Do you have any multiple choice answers to pick from?

OpenStudy (snowystorm777):

yes x = −32 and x = −4 x = −4 and x = 0 x = 0 and x = 28 No solution

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I looked at another thread of this equation, some said -4 and some said it has no solution.

OpenStudy (snowystorm777):

oh

OpenStudy (blyue):

Ergh, when I did the math, I got 0 and -4. But @Fuzzbro is right. I looked around and saw a few others had said no solution could be an answer as well.

OpenStudy (snowystorm777):

thanks though

OpenStudy (blyue):

You're welcome... Now I'm actually pretty curious as to what the answer is! This is a very... odd question. To say the least.

OpenStudy (freckles):

subtract 16 on both sides |x+2|=14-16 |x+2|=-2 think...what kinds of numbers will | | output?

OpenStudy (snowystorm777):

positive

OpenStudy (freckles):

| |=positive or zero but here we have | |=-2

OpenStudy (freckles):

-2 is a negative number

OpenStudy (freckles):

which is neither positive or zero

OpenStudy (snowystorm777):

ok

OpenStudy (freckles):

there is no number you can take the absolute value of that will give you -2

OpenStudy (snowystorm777):

sooo no solution?

OpenStudy (freckles):

right

OpenStudy (snowystorm777):

Thanks!
