OpenStudy (wwhitlock):

We call it the French and Indian War. In Europe it's the Seven Year War. It was an almost world war between France and Britain. Those two have spent most of history fighting. What does this have to do with anything? War is expensive. Our little part of the war kicked the French out of Canada and everything east of the Mississippi river. (Some of the French went down to New Orleans and invented gumbo) So the King and his government figure that since they save our buts in the Ohio Valley and Canada and other places they told colonists to stay out of, it seemed right that we should help pay the bills. So they taxed, sugar and tea and paper and tried to get us to pay up. It didn't work. Britain hadn't taxed the colonies in a long time. Colonial governments had been doing the taxing. We elected them, they taxed us. Parliment is elected, but only people in Britain get a vote. That was a problem. We also had started trading with some other countries. That was against the rules. But the colonies got away with it for a long time. Britain says that's gonna stop. More problems. Throw in the fact that England is a little island a couple of weeks away by ship. The King's government is treating us like second class citizens and useing us only for what is good for them. It all starts making people willing to fight. Especially if you live in New England where farming is terrible and trade is what brings in the big bucks.
