This one is confusing. But if you look at the first equation
x+y=12
and (somehow... this takes thinking) match that up with
sum of red and gold beads is 12

it appears x and y are the number of ounces of each type of bead

(I put in the 1*x to make it clear we can think of x as 1*x)
