previous drafts of the NGSS called for more explicit discussion of how students can learn

This chapter presents perspectives, a rationale and research supporting

emphasis on
the
nature of science
in
the context of the
NGSS
.
Additionally
, eight
understandings
with appropriate grade

level outcomes
are included
as ex
tensions of the
science and engineering practices and crosscutting concepts, not as a fourth dimension of

we discuss
how to emphasize
the nature of science in school
programs.
