The Whig party in the United States was active from about 1830 to 1850. They formed as opposition to many of the policies of Andrew Jackson. Their focus was on the rule of law. And can generally be described as conservative. Presidents Harrison, Taylor, Tyler and Fillmore were Whigs.
It broke apart over slavery, northern Whigs opposed slavery. Those northern Whigs, including Lincoln, became the nucleus for the Republican Party.
