we count the longest carbon chain pentane that becomes the parent name. then we add dione to indicate that there are two ketone groups, then we indicate where they are on what carbons 2 and 4 so alltogether 2,4 penta-dione

Similarly, a 1,3 dicarbonyl is also called \(\beta \)-diketone.
