Your proposition is highly seductive; honestly, I think any sane man would prefer God not to exist, then again my definition of God is a twisted dark one. Should we care if God is imaginary or real? To me it seems like caring about Him being imaginary or real is a very minor arbitrary detail to a machine.

I think the reason people would prefer God not exist is that then he/she has to pay no (ultimate) consequence for his or her wrong doing. With a God, or gods, comes eternal judgement. Doesn't sound too pleasant for those who did not live "godly" lives. [Or, in the Christian sense, believe in and claim Jesus' name]
