OpenStudy (jamye):

I am not good at math

OpenStudy (leonardo0430):

im brain dead right now but are you supposed to find the ratio between the two triangles?

OpenStudy (shaleiah):

No, I have to find the area of the smallest triangle.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Leonardo0430 is on the right track: You ARE supposed to find the ratio between the lengths of corresponding sides of two triangles as a first step. The triangles are similar, so the sides are proportionate. To get you started: 12 feet is what fraction of 32 feet? You could create a ratio from 12 and 32. Using that ratio in some way, determine how the height of the larger triangle is related to the height of the smaller triangle. Keep in mind that the formula for the area of a triangle is\[A=\frac{ bh }{ 2 },\]

OpenStudy (mathmale):

... where b represents the length of the base, h represents the height of the triangle, and A obviously represents the area of the triangle.

OpenStudy (shaleiah):

12 feet is 3/8 of 32 feet

OpenStudy (shaleiah):

\[\frac{ 32*12 }{ 2 }=192\]

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Refering to your first comment: 12 ft. is 3/8 ths of 32. Thus, multiplying any side of the larger triangle by 3/8 should result in the corresponding side length in the smaller triangle. If b is the base of the larger triangle, then the base of the smaller triangle is (3/8)b. Write a similar statement for the height of the smaller triangle. I'm withholding mention of your tentaive "192" answer, for the time being.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

that's "tentative."

OpenStudy (shaleiah):

height of the smaller triangle= \[\frac{ 9 }{ 2 }\]

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Let b represent the base of the larger triangle. Then, the base b2 of the smaller triangle is (3/8)b. Let h repres. the height of the larger triangle. Then the ht. b2 of the smaller triangle is What?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Base of smaller triangle is (3/8)b; height of smaller triangle is (3/8)h. Use this basse and this height to find the area of the smaller trianghle. show your work,, please.

OpenStudy (shaleiah):

\[\frac{ 3 }{ 8 }*\frac{ 3 }{ 8}=\frac{ 9 }{64 }\]
