Well, if by "controlled" you mean varied as the independent variable, doesn't it make sense that you are going to control the mass and see what that does to the period of the pendulum swing, if everything else remains constant?

Doesn't it seem like the way you would measure the effect of mass on a pendulum swing would be to set up a pendulum where you can change only the mass and observe if/how the period changes?
